CULTURE THROUGH ENGLISH 1(LECTURE IN ENGLISH)

  1. Course Description
    우리문화를 세계화시키고, 타문화를 이해하기 위해 요구되는 영어 능력을 배양하기 위한 강좌이다. 학생들이 영어로 된 문화관련 텍스트를 이해하고, 영어로 된 영화나 연극 등을 즐길 수 있고, 나아가 외국인들과 함께 영어로 의사소통 할 수 있도록 한다. 나아가 문화관광부에 의해 한국의 상징(Images of Korea)으로 선택된 주제들(한복, 인삼, 김치, 불고기, 한글 등)에 관한 영어 텍스트를 가지고 문화와 관련된 표현을 익힌다. 문화관광부 및 문화재관리청 등 문화관련 웹사이트를 이용한다.
  2. Course Objectives
    Students can acquire and understand a general overview of Korean culture and be able to appropriately introduce it to foreigners. They can also compare Korean culture with foreign cultures, distinguish and understand the similarities and differences between them, and suggest ways to develop mutual cultures.
  3. Teachnig Method
    1. Lectures on Korean culture are taught using text, video, photos, and the internet in parallel, comparing Korean culture with foreign cultures for sharing common aspects of culture. 2. Lectures will be classified into three parts, that is, Korean Wave, Korean traditional culture, and Korea’s UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. 1) The Korean Wave, which began to spread mainly in Asia in the mid-1990s, has spread throughout the world around in 2010. It has expanded its scope to all areas of Korean culture such as popular culture and lifestyle culture. The causes and processes of the Korean Wave will be introduced. 2) Korean traditional culture introduces various traditional forms such as traditional music, folk dance, painting, calligraphy, and porcelain which have recently become the origins of the Korean Wave. 3) There are 16 UNESCO Cultural Heritage Sites, 22 UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and 18 UNESCO Memory of the World in Korea. The major parts of culture, such as art, music, dance, literature, architecture, clothing, and food, have always coexisted in the past and present. Through UNESCO world cultural heritage in Korea, we will check together how Korean tradition and modernity coexist and continue.

  5. Assessment
    There are two quiz tests on the content learned in this course, and the quiz tests are conducted during class. The midterm exam will be replaced by a cultural visit report (Text) written after visiting Korean cultural sites before the midterm exam. And all students write and submit demo lesson materials (PPT) based on the cultural visit report. The final exam is a demo lesson presentation using the materials (PPT). Examples of cultural visit topics include music, art, sculpture, dance, food, clothing, architecture, religion, ideology, sports, etc.
  6. Requiments
    Prior study of Korean culture through pre-distributed lecture materials is recommended. The total attendance score is 20 points, and 1 point is deducted for each absence. One point will be deducted for every three times you are late or leave the classroom early, and leaving class without permission will be treated as an absence. Absences due to school events require the submission of relevant official documents, and absences due to illness require an official doctor's note or medical certificate to be acknowledged as attendance.
  7. Practical application of the course
    Through this course, students will gain a deep understanding of Korean culture, and through this understanding, they will be able to effectively teach Korean culture in parallel when teaching Korean language to foreigners.
