ICT AI AND SOCIETY

  1. Course Description
    This course studies contemporary human behaviors, relationships and society in the digital age from the perspective of technology sociology. The basic concept of technology sociology, particularly digital sociology, will be introduced. With the advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) as well as the commercial and industrial application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the Industry 4.0 era, all aspects of human society are experiencing social change. Social science studies should cover the updated development in ICT & AI, its effects and practices in human society.
  2. Course Objectives
    This course explores the social change in the digital age. Through the course, students will understand the change associated with technological advancement, adopt the change as well as manage the threats and opportunities associated with the fast-transforming environment under the widely used ICT and start using AI. No matter preparing in which industry, public or private sector, the graduates will benefit from up-to-date knowledge and analytical skills acquired from this course.
  3. Teachnig Method
    ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AND PLAGIARISM Students should follow the University’s policy on academic integrity and plagiarism. Cheating and examination impersonation will be disqualified. Penalties will be applied for late submission of assignments and papers. Please refer to the related rules and regulations of the College for details. Class rules: Sick leave needs a doctor’s prescription afterward. Causal leave needs preapproval supporting documents that can be submitted afterward. Deadlines for assignments and presentations are not extendable. Late submission of assignments is generally not acceptable. In an exceptional case, a penalty may be applied. No re-sit for the quiz and exam for any reason. For sick leave and a family member’s funeral coincident with the quiz or exam date, a compensation test will be given afterward without penalty.

    Google Forms project (20%) is an individual project for every student to fill out a Google Form. It is about a simple application of Generative AI /chatbot and the students’ experience and comment on the work of AI.

  7. Practical application of the course
    Upon completion of this course, students will be equipped to: 1. Understand the nature of information technology change and the era of AI in the digital era. 2. Discuss the effects on individuals and society in using ICT & AI from a sociological perspective. 3. Explain the identity, interaction, human relationship, and social structure issues in the digital society with social theories. 4. Explore the further development of ICT, AI and the further changes in political, economic and social aspects of human society.
