SCIENCE IN KOREAN LITERARY TRADITION

본 과목은 한국의 문화 전통 속에 내재되어 있는 과학/의학적 요소와 인식론을 탐색하면서 인문학적 상상력과 과학기술/문화를 결합하는 융합적 사고 훈련을 목표로 한다. 이 과목에서는 먼저 한국 문화와 문학 전통 내에 자리하고 있는 사회적-과학적 요소를 추출하고 이에 대한 의학/과학에 대한 인식을 살펴보는 한편 의학 혹은 과학적 탐색과 지식이 전통과 근대 문화 구조 속에서 어떤 방식으로 배치되고 재현되었는지에 대한 질문으로부터 논의를 시작한다. 학생들은 여러 자료 (시, 소설, 의학서, 전문서, 백과사전류)를 다양하게 접하면서 한국의 전통 의학에서부터 근대 과학을 잇는 인문학적 상상력과 과학 지식의 관련성에 대해 공부하게 될 것이다. 인문학과 과학기술 양자의 융합을 돕고 학생들의 자율성과 창의적 사고능력을 유도할 수 있도록 온-오프라인 활동, 프로젝트 참여, 자발적 토의와 토론을 구성하여 16주간의 강의를 구성하게 된다.

This course explores the evolution, circulation, and cultural meanings of scientific knowledge in Korea from the Koryŏ to the Chosŏn dynasty. Moving beyond a narrow, laboratory-centered understanding of science, the class approaches science, skills, and technology as embedded practices that shaped everyday life—farming and agronomy, craftsmanship and material production, weaving and textile culture, food preparation, medicine, astronomy, and systems of measurement. Through close readings of literary texts, documents, and visual sources, students will examine how scientific ideas were represented, debated, and transformed within Korean literature and culture. Most course materials will be provided through the CTL website. (한국어) 과학 기술은 오늘날 가장 중요한 지식 영역 중 하나이지만 결코 실험실 안에만 머무는 지식이 아니다. 오래전부터 농사를 짓고, 물건을 만들며, 길쌈을 하고, 음식을 조리하는 일상의 과정 속에도 과학적 사고와 기술은 깊이 내재되어 있다. 본 강의는 한국 전근대 시대의 일상 문화와 지식 체계를 ‘과학’이라는 프레임으로 재조명하며, 문학과 과학의 유기적 관계를 탐구하는 것을 목표로 한다. 문학 작품과 역사 기록, 영화 자료를 분석하면서, 과학적 개념과 기술이 인간의 문화와 감수성을 어떻게 변화시켰는지, 그리고 인간의 문학적 상상력과 서사가 과학 기술의 발전과 지식 혁신에 어떠한 방식으로 기여했는지를 살펴본다. * 본 과목을 이수한 학생에게는 Compass K 점수 10점 부여. 국어국문 전공생 졸업 요건 충족. * 학기 중 TOEIC 응시생에게 가산점 부여.

* 수업진행 방식 안내* 교수자는 강의는 영어, 한국어 병행 강의를 진행하며, 학생들이 개별로 혹은 모둠 별로 참여하여 문제를 해결하는 과제 제시.

* 학습 평가 방식 안내* - Attendance (출석) 10% : Students will be expected to participate fully in class discussions. Those whose absences add up to one third of the 15-week period will automatically fail the course. 학생의 출석일 뿐만 아니라 강의 참여도를 함께 반영하여 평가. - Final Essay (기말 보고서) 40%: For the final projects, students are required to write an analytical essay on science-fiction and also submit individual writing assignments, defining the value of studying the humanities in a science-technology driven world. 보고서는 각 3-4장 분량. 각각 강의 시간 중 한글과 영어로 작성. - Presentations (발표) 20% : Each team of 3-4 students explores a work of film (or fiction) that has the strong elements of science, history and/or fantasy. The presentation must clearly show the theme, form, contents of the selected film and offers the challenging notion of "science" reflected in the work. A 30-minute presentation with PowerPoint materials is highly recommended. 학생이 개별 혹은 팀별로 영화/다큐를 분석하고 결과를 발표함. - Pop Quiz (쪽지 시험) 40%: Three quizzes will assess understanding of key terms, concepts, and expressions taught during class sessions. 학기 중 4번 단어 쪽지 시험 실시.
