BIOMETEOROLOGY

환경 대기의 기상상태로 인한 생태계의 다양한 현상 및 특성을 비교 분석하고 기상변동으로 인한 생태계의 영향을 해석하고 생태계 파괴를 사전에 예측는데 목적이 있다.

You will understand the following items at the end of this course, 1. The causes and problems of HABs observed around the Korean Peninsula and the relationship between the HABs and meteorological factors. 2. How to prepare the presentation about scientific issues. 3. How to treat in situ observation data or satellite remote sensing images to observe HABs.

I will mainly give lectures in the former part of the course. I explain the HAB representative species, the causes, and their relationship with meteorological factors. And we will try a group activity after the midterm examination. Five or six students make a group and analyze the data about the HABs in the Korean Peninsula. I give you eight lecture times for discussion and group report preparation. The team leaders have to inform the progress of their team several times. The lectures are mainly held using PowerPoint. The new words in the handout will be checked at the beginning of each lecture. I also give the review quizzes from the contents of the previous lecture. The questions are shown on the screen, and students answer orally. The additional points will be given to the student who answers the quizzes. Furthermore, XO quizzes will be given three times during this course. The followings are requests for students who attend this course. 1. Please be on time, and don’t go out during the lecture, or you will be assumed as “late” or “absent.” 2. Don’t use your cell phone during the lecture. You will be treated as absent if you receive a call in the classroom. 3. Don’t eat or drink anything during the lecture.

'Class contribution' means the sum of special points you got in this semester. The points are given when you show positive actions like below. 1. when we check the meanings of new terms on the screen and you tell the answer in 5 seconds. 2. when you answer the reviewing quizzes. 3. when you mention something or answer my questions in English during lecture time. 4. in the case you get 1st -3rd places in mid-term/final exam 5. if you ask something about the lecture. (visit my office / send email, message, Kakao-talk…) 6. No tardiness, No absence (except allowed absences by the university) 7. If you are a student who enrolled in this course from other majors.

This course will be held in English, and the distributed handouts will be written in English. I will upload the handouts to the ‘교수학습지원시스탬 .’ Please download and print them out before the lecture. The students attending this course must prepare for the next lesson. I prohibit the usage of the electronic dictionary in the examinations since many students pointed out the possibility of cheating. Please prepare the word lists distributed in the class or an English paper dictionary in advance.

Students who attend this class will get knowledge about the environmental issues related to the ocean. At the same time, you will learn technical English in the field of the environment through reading handouts or listening to lectures. Furthermore, you will try to analyze actual HAB data and make a presentation PPT in the latter half of this course. Through the processes, you will get some skills for scientific presentation.
