PHILOSOPHY AND HISTORY OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

  1. Course Description
    철학적, 역사적 맥락 속에서 유아교육에 대한 다양한 사상을 검토함으로써, 유아교육의 중요성과 현재 유아교육의 현상을 바로 이해하며 미래 방향에 대한 시사점을 발견하도록 한다.
  2. Course Objectives
    In this course, students will: • Be exposed to leading educational thinkers of the 20th century; • Review and analyze the work of philosophers of early childhood education; • Explore historical ideas that became the foundation of current educational programs and teaching methods; • Explore various teaching methods, strategies, and programs across the globe; • Examine ones point of view on early childhood education through historical review of education; • Read original work by a leading educational thinker; • Complete essays (including video presentations, etc.) reviewing the life and theory of the selected educational thinker.
  3. Teachnig Method
    Students are required to: 1. Attend all classes and be on time. 2. Complete class readings, homework, and projects by said due date. 3. Participate during large and small group activities. (This includes acquisition, enhanced group collaboration and communication through both individual and (small group, large group) teamwork activities. Students will reflect and learn material through the experience of solving open-ended problems and situations that occur within early childhood education.) 4. Initiate meetings with Professor outside of classroom meeting times (when help is needed). 5. Respect and encourage classmates. 6. Have fun and be an active participant in class discussions.

  7. Practical application of the course
    - Understand, analyze and use the major concepts, principles, theories, and research related to the nature and role of the influences of the development of contemporary early childhood education. - Demonstrate understanding of how cultural groups and individual cultural identities affect language learning and school achievement, and the role that culture and subcultures play in the teaching and learning processes of culturally, linguistically and ability diverse students. Critical Thinking: Critical thinking involves not only presenting the contents of a text, but critically analyzing the intent, politics and purposes of the author(s) behind the text. Why did the author(s) write this paper? Is there an agenda attached? Who funded the article? Where was it published? What are the politics of the publishing house? When was the article published? What did the author(s) omit from the text? Does the article discuss its limitations? What do scholars from other traditions say about the topic?
