- Course Description
This course is intended to provide experience using 4 programs of the Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. These programs (especially the first three) are commonly used in the business world and proficiency in using them is valuable.
An additional goal is to provide design skills, particularly with respect to Word and PowerPoint, as these are commonly used programs to create visuals, such as documents, basic pamphlets, and key presentations, which can dramatically influence viewers. Touch typing & email etiquette will be a focus as well, along with originality in conception and execution of design.
- Course Objectives
The course goals primarily focus on enabling students to gain competencies (skills, awareness, etc.) that could be used to successfully obtain a Microsoft Office Specialist license/certification for MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Excel.
The course aims also include:
A - Become proficient, skilled, & competent in using MS Office because the programs (we study in class) are commonly used in the business world and proficiency in using them is valuable.
B - Create a portfolio of work; An additional goal is to improve design skills, which can dramatically influence viewers & the impression you create on others.
C - Develop desktop publishing skills to use independently in the future in internships and careers; Also, email etiquette will be important too, along with originality in conception and execution of design
D - Become aware of the differences between MS Office commands and shortcuts in Windows and on MacOS. A number of students bring their personal laptops, and those using MacOS need to learn how to accomplish their tasks on their own computers.
- Teachnig Method
Class rules will be elaborated in a separate syllabus to be distributed in class (via CTL) because this format is too limited to express them clearly and fully. These rules include the following general principles:
1 - Use English for class communications, inside and outside class (such as when writing emails and doing work)
2 - Submit all assignments in a timely manner & in the required formats. Any extension needs appropriate prior approval, which must be requested by email within a specific time frame.
3 - Use the class website effectively & frequently.
4 - Be aware, informed, & responsible. You are the manager of yourself, your work, & your actions, so monitor your progress & keep records of feedback, grades, etc.
5 - Save all work to cloud storage, always!
6 - Show academic honesty, …along with integrity and originality. Plagiarism will be strongly punished.
7 - Participate positively in class
8 - Support one another during class; For mutual support & learning, you will be given a 3-4 person group.
9 - Reflect on your work to guide your growth
10 - Stay focused during class time; resist the temptation to use Kakaotalk, to surf the web, or to do work for another class during Bus. App. class time!

Everyone who takes this course should have familiarity with:
1 - touch typing
2 - the basics of using a browser to view CTL and to view PDF files online
3 - searching freely licensed online repositories of images, clipart, and so on (etc)
4 - skill at reading English-language instructions and following them (instructions are often accompanied by screenshots to indicate what to do)
- Practical application of the course
As noted elsewhere, this course is intended to provide experience using several programs of the Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with the goal of becoming familiar with skills needed for achieving Microsoft Office Specialization. These programs are commonly used in the business world and proficiency in using them is valuable. An additional focus of the course will be on using Microsoft Access or video production (according to the needs of the course members). A number of students who complete the course proceed to earn their MOS certificates, and even those who have previously completed an MOS certification state that they learn practical additional skills and increase their awareness of design, clear communication skills, and so on. Students who have participated in internships while completing the course have spoken of benefits of learning Excel and applying those skills directly to their internship work.
