ENGLISH BASICS FOR KOREAN STUDIES

본 과목은 한국 언어, 문화, 역사에 대한 배경지식을 획득하고 한국학에 대한 이해를 넓히는 것을 목표로 한다. 다양한 문학과 비문학 자료를 통해 특히 한국 전통과 문화에 대한 지식을 쌓는 한편, 이를 적절한 영어 표현 번역하는 연습을 통해 한국 지식 자원을 보편 언어로 담아내는 것을 중점적으로 다룬다. 학생들은 한국학 전문 지식인으로서 한국 문학과 문화를 정확한 언어로 표현하고 소통하는 능력을 키우고, 국내 및 국외에서 활발히 진행되고 있는 한국학 동향과 흐름을 파악한다. 이를 통해 한국문화와 외국문화를 결합하여 국제적 시각과 감각을 키우고 소통할 수 있는 능력을 획득할 수 있다.

This course offers an introduction to Korean studies through English. We will explore major aspects of Korean culture, history, and literature within the broader context of globalization. The goal is to develop a comprehensive understanding of Korea’s cultural and historical background while practicing accurate and appropriate English expressions to describe related facts and concepts. The course will be conducted in both English and Korean to deepen students’ understanding of the materials and to strengthen their communication skills. 본 강좌는 영어르 매개로 한국학을 소개하는 입문 과정입니다. 본 강의에서는 세계화라는 큰 맥락 속에서 한국의 문화, 역사, 문학의 주요 단면을 탐구합니다. 강의 목표는 한국 문화에 대한 포괄적인 이해를 쌓는 동시에 한국학 관련 표현과 개념을 적절하고 정확한 영어 표현으로 설명하는 능력을 기르는 데 있습니다. 수업은 영어와 한국어를 병행하여 진행하며, 학생의 자기 표현 능력을 향상시키기 위해 학습자 중심의 조별 토의, 문제 해결, 및 발표 위주로 운영됩니다.

This course will be conducted in English and Korean. Please note that instructions and detailed explanation will be provided in Korean in order to enhance students' understanding of the class assignments, rules, and contents. From the beginning, the class focuses on historical aspects, providing readings on premodern Korean cultures, and the following sessions are concentrated on the specific issues and phenomena in Korean culture in the global context. In class, we will translate some literary materials to understand the genre, terms, and rhetoric of traditional songs and prose and encourage a field research/work to explore local culture of Daegu City/Gyengbuk Province. The majority of readings are available in the course website. 강의는 대면수업, 영어강의로 진행되며, 영어에 익숙치 않은 학생들의 눈높이에 맞춰 한국어를 병행하여 사용합니다. 초반 강의에서는 먼저 한국 문화를 시대순으로 정리하면서 주요 이슈들을 영어 지문/기사를 읽으며 이해하는 방식으로 진행되며, 직접 시조와 가사를 영어로 번역해 보거나, 대구이나 로컬의 문화/역사적 장소를 직접 찾아가고 그에 대한 안내보고서를 작성하는 현장 학습형 과제들이 제시됩니다. 직접 한국과 역사에 대해 읽어보며 찾아가는 작업을 하면서 한국학 지식과 영어 표현 능력을 동시 증진하는 것을 목표로 합니다. 수업에 필요한 대부분의 읽기 자료는 PDF 형태로 교수학습지원 시스템에서 다운로드 하실 수 있습니다.

Attendance and Participation 15%: Students are expected to participate actively in class discussions, submit assignments on time, and be prepared to comment on each work we read. One absence is allowed without penalty. Students whose absences reach one third of the 15-week course will automatically fail. Individual Project 25%: Each student will conduct research on local cultures, customs, or histories of Daegu or Gyungbuk Province. After research, students will design a customized tour route that introduces visitors to the geography, history, and culture of the region. Midterm 30%: The midterm exam will be held in the eighth week. It will consist mainly of multiple-choice and short answer questions, with two or three essay questions. Final Exam 30%: The final exam will follow the same format as the midterm.
