- Course Description
This course is designed to enable students to develop and improve their ability to understand basic conversational English, and to hold simple discussions upon a range of everyday subjects. The content and format of the course, together with the topic areas, are based on the teaching units of the course textbook, Breakthrough1. However, there is a very strong emphasis on speaking and listening skills, and there will purposely be very little reading or teaching of grammar.
This course aims to provide a teacher-led but student-centred learning and practice environment in which students can develop their speaking skills. The course will equip students with a broad range of both language structures and vocabulary, so that they may converse at a basic level in a variety of routine social contexts. Students will be strongly encouraged to engage actively inclass discussions, thus allowing them to develop their confidence, fluency and accuracy.
- Course Objectives
• improving fluency through speaking activities
• expanding vocabulary through discussions, role plays, presentations, pair works, and group works on various topics
• develop a solid of understanding of oral English communication, as well as basic structures, taught through non explicit conceptual structure teachings, but through communication, i.e. using the target language.
• Students will be required to demonstrate their ability to interact with their teacher and classmates in English.
• Students will be expected to participate during class discussions, ask questions, and actively work on improving their communication skills.

At the end of the semester, students who successful complete this class will be able to:
- talk about themselves, their families, their daily schedule, their hobbies, as well as other things that interest them.

- ask questions in English to help carry on a conversation and to expand on a topic.
