COMMUNICATION ENGLISH Ⅰ

This course is designed to enable students to develop and improve their ability to understand basic conversational English, and to hold simple discussions upon a range of everyday subjects. The content and format of the course, together with the topic areas, are based on the teaching units of the course textbook, Breakthrough1. However, there is a very strong emphasis on speaking and listening skills, and there will purposely be very little reading or teaching of grammar. This course aims to provide a teacher-led but student-centred learning and practice environment in which students can develop their speaking skills. The course will equip students with a broad range of both language structures and vocabulary, so that they may converse at a basic level in a variety of routine social contexts. Students will be strongly encouraged to engage actively inclass discussions, thus allowing them to develop their confidence, fluency and accuracy.

The goal of this course is to have students gain more confidence in their English speaking and listening abilities. There will be a focus on using more personalized speech rather than memorized speech.

1. Students are expected to come to class on time. 2. Be prepared to participate as much as possible. 3. Proper attitude and etiquette for offline and online classes. 4. Speaking in English in the class.
