- Course Description
Satellite remote sensing is the skill to derive the phenomena on the Earth from space using the electromagnetic wave. It makes possible getting high resolution data in the huge area spatially and temporally. And satellite remote sensing can derive the information at the same area constantly in the extent of the lifetime of satellite. It means that the satellite remote sensing is the essential tool to observe the ever-changing global environment. In this course, we learn about the principle of satellite remote sensing in the first half of the course. Many kinds of satellite remote sensing data derived from the earth-observing satellite such as surface temperature, ocean color, wind, ice concentration will be introduced. In the latter half of the course, we will learn how to search satellite data by the internet and how to handle the data using the free-software.
- Course Objectives
You will understand the following items at the end of this course,
1. The merits and limits of the utilization of satellite remote sensing for environmental study.
2. Many kinds of physical/biological factors on the Earth are derived from satellite remote sensing.
3. How to search satellite remote sensing data distributed on the internet sites.
4. The simple treatment of satellite remote sensing data using the free-software.
- Teachnig Method
In the former half of the semester, I will mainly talk about the fundamental of satellite remote sensing. OX quizzes will be given three times during the course.
In the last few weeks, we will have a hands-on lesson. While students will be trying the tasks using software, I will give each student a man-to-man discussion.
The lecture is mainly held using PowerPoint.
The new words in the handout will be checked at the beginning of a lecture.
I also give the review quizzes from the contents of the previous lecture. The questions are shown on the screen, and students answer orally. The additional points will be given to the student who answers the quizzes.
Furthermore, XO quizzes will be given three times during this course.
The followings are requests for students who attend this course.
1. Please be on time and don't go out during the lecture, or you will be assumed as "late" or "absent."
2. Don't use your cell phone during the lecture. You will be treated as absent if you receive a call in the classroom.
3. Don't eat or drink anything during the lecture.

- Assessment
"Class contribution" is evaluated by the number of points given to students in the following cases,
1. They answer the reviewing quiz or say something in English during lecture time.
2. They got 1st to 3rd places in the examinations.
3. No tardy and no absence (except allowed absences by the university)
4. They ask something about the contents of the lecture (visit my office / send an email, message, Kakao-talk, etc.)
5. They enrolled in this course from other colleges.
The student who gets maximum points will be assumed as the highest score (20%) in the "class contribution."
- Requiments
This course will be held in English, and the distributed handouts will be written in English. I will upload the handouts to the '교수학습지원시스탬 .' Please download and print them out before the lecture. The students attending this course must prepare for the next lesson.
I prohibit the usage of the electronic dictionary in the examinations since many students pointed out the possibility of cheating. Please prepare the word lists distributed in the class or an English paper dictionary in advance.
- Practical application of the course
Students who attend this class will learn about remote sensing data and the simple analyzing skill of ocean color data using free software. You can improve your skill of making a report using a PC. At the same time, you will learn technical English in satellite remote sensing and environment by reading handouts or listening to lectures.
