- Course Description
The aim of this course is to provide students with needed support in academic English, with the intent to enable their increased success here at KAC. The course is intended to provide support in all English skills, with slightly more emphasis on reading and writing. While in this course, your fellow classmates will be a valuable resource, as (small) group discussion and reflection will be important to your success and growth.
- Course Objectives
a) Students will be able to use English to express ideas effectively, critically, and persuasively.
b) Students will also be able to analysis language at the paragraph, sentence, clause, phrase, and word level.
c) Students will be able to describe aspects of critical thinking, as well as common rhetorical strategies, and apply these to their own work.
- Teachnig Method
Typically, the course will proceed in various modules, based around a reading packet, journalling, and discussions and activities based on the reading packet. There will be written and oral activities conducted around the reading packets.

Professional students should conduct themselves accordingly. Among other things, this means students should:
Act in a professional manner; idle chatting, gaming or texting or non-essential work on
cellphones, and other un-academic activities are inappropriate
Bring a notebook & writing tools to each class.
Present a status report at every class
Submit assignments in a timely manner; deadlines are always given, and if a student/group
needs to extend their deadline, they must speak with the instructor prior to the deadline in
order to receive approval for extending a deadline. Otherwise, late penalties will be given
Bring draft(s) of the current task(s) to each class. Feedback sessions and/or in-class writing
time may be given in addition to scheduled feedback dates.

- Practical application of the course
The language and academic skills you develop in this course will be key factors in your level of success here at university. And as such, are transferable to all other subject areas.
