POLITICAL THEORY

IR 학생들에게는 이 과목에서 자주 사용되고 이론적인 접근과 개념의 집합을 내포하는 정치적인 생각들의 기본에 대해 아는 것이 필수적이다. Political Theory는 보수주의, 자유주의, 급진주의 같은 넓은 범위의 정치적 이론들과 권리, 정의, 재산, 평등, 자유 같은 개념들을 다루고 있다. 이 강좌는 고대 그리스, 중세시대 철학자들의 업적, 계몽 사상가, 그리고 당대의 이론주의자들의 고전적인 집필들을 소개할 것이다. 이론들과 개념들은 케이스 연구들의 효과적인 사용을 통해 이해할 수 있도록 만들어질 것이다. 그것들의 정치의 현실세계에 대한 관련성이 반영될 것이다. 이 강좌는 정치적 청학의 역사에 간략한 개요를 주면서 시작될 것이다. 하지만, 이것은 몇몇의 이론들과 개념에 따라서 구성되어질 것이다. 학생들은 가장 중요한 정치적 사상가들의 원문 읽고 토의할 기회를 가질 것이다. 그들은 어떻게 이론들이 시간이 흐름에 따라 발전되어 왔는지와 특정한 사상가들의 역사적 배경에 관해 배울 것이다. 학생들은 정치적 세계를 이해하고 공부하는데 필수적인 건전한 이론의 기초를 받아들여질 것이다.

The course will introduce classical theoretical writings of ancient Greece (Plato, Aristotle), the works of medieval thinkers (Augustine and Thomas Aquinas), enlightenment thinkers (Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Kant) and contemporary theorists (Rawls, Habermas, Sen, Strauss). The course will start with giving a brief overview over the history of political philosophy. However, it will be organized according to the several theories and concepts which will be introduced and discussed.
Theories and concepts will be made intelligible through the effective use of case studies. Their relevance for the real world of politics and International Relations will be illustrated.

Active participation is expected.

Students will have the opportunity to read and discuss primary texts of the most important political thinkers. They will learn how theories developed over time and hear about the historical background of certain thinkers. Students will be provided with a sound theoretical fundament which is indispensible for the study and understanding of the world of international politics.
