- Course Description
Introduction
The course is designed to develop students’ understanding and familiarity with international relations in the Northeast Asian region, taking into account the complicated diplomatic, economic, historical, and security characteristics of the countries in this region. This course will place particular focus on the following countries in Northeast: the Republic of Korea, North Korea, China, Taiwan, and Japan – and their relations with each other.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students are expected to:
i) Develop an understanding of international relations in Northeast Asia
ii) Develop the skills necessary to enter a career in the civil service or journalism, or to undertake postgraduate study,
iii) Be in a position to undertake further specialized study in Northeast Asian affairs.

• Assessing critical events in international relations between the late 19th century and now
• Evaluating the roles of the empires, the colonies, and the nation-states in the region
• Comprehending the ever-changing structure of the regional and global order
• Getting familiar with the geopolitical realities of the region
• Conducting robust research and presenting the findings through the effective use of audiovisual methods
- Teachnig Method
• Attendance/Participation: 10 percent of the total grade.
• Term Project/Presentation: 20 percent of the total grade. Mutually agreed topic/issue. Be prepared to answer questions after you finish presenting.
• Midterm Exam: 30 percent of the total grade. It will be comprised of a set of identifications/short answer questions and one essay question.
• Final Exam: 40 percent of the total grade. The final exam is cumulative and it will be comprised of a set of identifications/short answer questions and one essay question.
