- Course Description
미국 뮤지컬계의 선구자인 리차드 로저스와 오스카 해머스타인 2세는 뮤지컬 넘버는 등장인물들이 감정의 고조 상태를 경험하는 순간이기에 이야기의 포인트가 된다고 말했다. 그러므로, 뮤지컬 넘버 는 그 감정의 표현적인 요소 역할을 한다.
이 과정에서 학생들은 뮤지컬 캐릭터에게 강한 감정적 관점을 주는 방법을 배우게 될 것이다. 학생들은 또한 캐릭터 "arc"에 대해 배우고, 어떻게 캐릭터들이 변화하고, 진화하고, 노래를 통해 그들의 "높은" 감정적 순간들에 도달하는지에 대해서도 배우게 될 것이다.
코스 과제는 캐릭터 개발의 특정한 측면을 조명하기 위해 특별히 선택된 개별 노래, 장면, 듀엣을 사용한다. 이 과정이 끝날 무렵 학생들은 복잡한 감정적 강도를 보이는 음악적 캐릭터를 이해하고 실행할 수 있어야 한다.
- Course Objectives
This course is designed to help students develop skills necessary for a professional life in the theatre. After completion of this course, students shoul have a greater understanding of the following:
1. identify and execute intense character emotion
2. connect emotion to the voice through song
3. transition from dialogue to singing
4. understand how characters points of view change
5. develop a “relationship” with another character
6. focus energy through the voice, face and body
7. recognize their own strengths and assets that they can use when creating character
- Teachnig Method
Students are expected to attend all lectures and complete all assignments on time. Absences, including preplanned absences, will be handled on a case by case basis.
Assignments that are completed late are subject to a lower grade.

This course is open to theatre and musical theatre majors.
Acceptance into the class may be subject to the instructor‘s approval.
Priority will be given to upper class students (4th years, then 3rd years, etc).
- Practical application of the course
This course is a performance and participation course, and will use individual songs, scenes, and duets designed to help the
student understand the character’s emotional point of view through the lyrics, music and script.
These skills serve as basic tools for the professional musical actor. Through a more thorough understanding of how to create complex characters,
particularly through song, students will be better equipped for a professional life in the theatre.
We will select songs that have strong character point of views, and that exhibit complex character emotional intensity.
