CONCEPTS SHAPING CITIES

  1. Course Description
    The purpose of this course is to investigates the design aspect of this complex entity that is the city. Everything that happens within cities is the results of decisions made by citizens, designers, investors or governments and they all contribute to making the city look the way it does. More specifically, this course will look at how historical, social, cultural, technological, economic, artistic and ethical concepts can affect the shape of our cities. It is a look into how urban environments have dealt with multifaceted issues and the consequences that can arise from specific design decisions.
  2. Course Objectives
    - Realize the importance of design within cities - Understand basic urban design concepts and their influence on the shape of cities - Understand where city design ideas come from, be able to recognize them & know how to draw on them when making decisions that will influence the shape of the environment - Acquire a deeper knowledge of current urban issues & ways in which to find solutions to them
  3. Teachnig Method
    - 16 weeks of classes - Lectures, class discussions and video presentations are part of the teaching process - Discussions and questions/answers with the students to improve the understanding of the lecture content

    - No prior knowledge of urban planning & design is required - Open mind and proactive attitude in class

    Participants will learn: - to better understand the environment we live in - to understand the impact of action done on the city - to become engaged and proactive members of the city
