CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY AND CULTURAL ISSUES IN KOREA

  1. Course Description
    This course is designed to introduce students to the "other side" of Korea where we will learn about how Korea is developing as a multicultural society. By focusing on under-studied parts of Korean society, students will be encouraged to develop critical thinking skills and empathy for the diverse people around them. By studying issues such as forced migration, social movements, gender issues and human rights in Korea, we will develop a more nuanced perspective on Korean society, placing it in a global landscape.

    - To learn about, investigate and analyze various socio-political issues taking place in contemporary South Korea - To develop critical thinking skills
  3. Teachnig Method
    - Masks are mandatory during class. - Plagiarism will result in zero grade points without exceptions. You will get a fail for plagiarism. - Skipping exams and/or assignments will result in a fail grade. - Students will lose grade points for lateness, unexcused absence, failing to participate in class, exhibiting poor manners such as sleeping in class or using a cellphone to accept calls or send texts, failing to bring a textbook to class etc. This is an indicative, not exhaustive list. - Respect difference and diversity in the classroom. - Respect each other and the professor in the classroom. - All informed opinions and discussion points are welcome. - Ask for help from the professor if needed. - Ensure good manners are maintained during class at all times. - Deadline extensions are only granted in extreme cases such as sickness, death or emergency (all must be evidenced with proper documentation in accordance with university rules.) - If a student has a registered and recognized disability of any kind and requires learning support, please make an appointment with the professor to discuss further. - Assignments are mandatory. Failure to complete midterm exams, assignments and /or final exams results in an automatic fail unless there are special circumstances, which must be documented with evidence
