LIBERAL ARTS SEMINAR AND DISCUSSION

  1. Course Description
    공통교양 교과인 <교양세미나와토론>은 지식 습득 능력과 비판적, 창의적 사고 능력, 합리적 의사소통 능력의 함양을 지향한다. 이를 위해 본 교과에서는 첫째, 인류의 보편적 지혜가 담긴 동서양의 고전과 명저를 읽고 문해력과 분석력을 향상시킨다. 둘째, 독서 후 글쓰기를 통해 비판적 사고력과 창의성을 기른다. 셋째, 발표 및 토론 활동으로 합리적 의사소통 능력을 키운다. 특히 토론은 스피치 실력의 향상과 종합적 사고 능력의 배양에 유용하다. 학생들은 독서, 글쓰기, 발표와 토론을 통해 교양인으로서 갖추어야 할 지적 소양과 도덕적 인성을 함양할 수 있다. 학생들은 이 수업에서 습득한 학습 능력을 다른 교과목 수업과 대학 생활 전반에 다양하게 활용할 수 있다. 또한 이 능력은 졸업 후 사회생활을 하는 데에도 큰 도움이 될 것이다.
  2. Course Objectives
    This course aims to support students in their individual goals, while offering the following pursuits for our general population: • empower students to read with a purpose • awaken our observational skills to different layers of information conveyed in texts • cultivate insight & critical thinking skills • engage in varied modes of sharing ideas & igniting discussion • cooperate with others in pursuing avenues of interest & research
  3. Teachnig Method
    Students attending this course will be required to act in a professional, respectful manner to their classmates, their instructor, and themselves, and take an earnest interest in their work. In addition, successful students typically do the following: • Submit assignments in a timely manner, and by following proper guidelines. [Extension requests must be sent via email and receive prior approval or penalties will be assessed: the assignment may not be accepted, and/or the final grade will be reduced.] • Regularly check the class website. A schedule of course activity (including readings) will be posted there, and journals/discussions will be hosted there, too. • Show and accept responsibility for themselves, their work, and their actions. • Exhibit academic honesty, integrity, and originality. Plagiarism will be strongly punished. • Monitor their progress in the course, maintaining records of their assignment scores, attendance, and so on. • Participate positively in class, with an open mind and a receptive attitude. • Reflect on their work and use the insight gained to guide themselves in their progress. • Bring all required materials (and, drafts) to class. Feedback sessions and/or in-class writing time may be given in addition to scheduled feedback dates. Note: All classroom activity will be conducted in English. A warning regarding this will only be given once. Continued use of other languages (i.e. not English) during class can result in a loss of points on your final grade for the course. Note: At least once during the semester, each student should meet with their instructor to discuss their progress in the course.

    To participate successfully in the course, every class member will need to: 1 - acquire the reading materials (in English, not Korean versions) 2 - read the assigned portions _before_ attending class, and bring the reading materials to class for discussion time 3 - bring their own personal laptop or tablet for taking notes, completing forms, and so on. As well, a positive and open mindset are needed for sharing opinions, hearing and reflecting on the opinions of others, and to engage in polite yet informed discussion during class time.

    Students who successfully complete this course will have a good grasp of important social, historical, and critical perspectives, and improve their critical thinking skills.
