From the President

Synn Ilhi

Despite the unforeseen challenges and shocks created by the Covid-19 situation, I am grateful to all of you who successfully finished the first semester of 2021. I hope the summer vacation will provide you with time to recharge yourself for the coming semester.

Despite the difficult situation, Keimyung achieved many great things in the first half of 2021. Keimyung won funding for several national projects like the Smart Manufacturing Human Resource Development Project funded by the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, the Basic Research Lab(BRL) funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the Education-Ministry-sponsored university project for sharing innovations in new technology and human resources development. Keimyung was the only university in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do to receive funding in 2 areas of Future Automobile Development and Tangible Media, about twelve billion won for each project per year for 6 years.

Keimyung received excellent marks in several governmental evaluations. The College of Pharmacy is accredited for the next 5 years in ‘2020 Pharmacy Education Evaluation and Accreditation’ and On-Campus Job Center has won first rank for five consecutive years. Keimyung has also won the High School Education Contribution University Support Project for nine consecutive years and served as the supervising institution for Pre-Startup Package Program for eleven consecutive years. This is evidence of Keimyung’s efforts and will to help high school students, and encourage our students to find employment and start businesses after graduation.

We also showed our vision and capacity on the international stage. Research papers in Medical Science and Engineering were published in prestigious international journals, a member of the Keimyung family won an international prize in design and a graduate of Keimyung Adams College passed the US bar exam.

In addition, the Office of Social Innovation Support hosts various activities to promote mutual development with local communities by organizing a policy advisory group. By running various projects with local communities, we are continuing the tradition of Keimyung to support our neighbors. Recent activities include a project to highlight the heritage and attractiveness of our regional villages, the development of a “Creative School” for middle school and high school students, and a project for computer programming education for local citizens.

During this vacation, we have planned various online and offline education programs and events focusing on college entrance for high school students and employment for our graduates. I hope that many students will actively participate in these programs.

The hoopoe, the Keimyung University bird commonly called ‘hoo-too-tee’, has a beautiful crown and a long beak. The crown seems to symbolize quest for higher learning and the truth, whereas the beak the efficient solution of the problems of daily reality. We all hope to achieve a balance and harmony between reality and ideals. I hope that you all have a meaningful summer vacation and that I find you on campus in September both healthy and well.
